GASHA's Response to Community Health Plans -  2011 - 2014

Community Health Boards Complete Three-year Community Health Plan

Your three Community Health Boards have just completed their first joint three-year community health plan (2011-14).  This plan includes recommendations to the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority to improve health services across the District in the following areas:

  • Strengthening and Supporting Mental Health in Our Communities
  • Implementing a Comprehensive Community-based Chronic Disease Strategy
  • Promoting and Supporting Healthy Living
  • Building Bridges to Youth Health
  • Facilitating Access to Services and Programs
  • Addressing Inequities to Improve Health

Community Health Plan 2011-14

In developing the plan, the Community Health Boards held 40 Community Consultations in communities in Guysborough County, Antigonish Town and County and Strait Richmond, with a total participation of 344 people.   While many focus groups were held in communities, others engaged youth in the schools, seniors, mental health consumers, community agencies, the business sector, and First Nations and African Nova Scotian communities.    The reports for each CHB area are available and can be found under Initiatives > Community Consultations.

In addition to the information from the community consultation, the Community Health Boards reviewed the results of the most recent Understanding Our Health Survey for their CHB area.  This was conducted in 2010 by MarketQuest Research for GASHA Public Health Services.  A random sample of questions were developed by GASHA and MarketQuest based on selected questions from the 2008 Canadian Community Health Survey Questionnaire.  In the spring of 2010, the survey was conducted reaching 1,121 residents across the district.  Respondents were asked questions related to:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Physical Activity
  • Height and Weight - BMI
  • Healthy Eating - Fruit and Vegetable Consumption
  • Food Security
  • Smoking Status
  • Alcohol Use
  • Illicit Drug use
  • Problem Gambling
  • Oral Health
  • Access and Use of Health Care Services
  • Home Care Services
  • Chronic Conditions
  • Health Screenings in General and for Men & Women

The Understanding Our Health Survey are available on the website.  See Initiatives > Health Survey The Community Health Plan will be posted on the website in February 2011.

A special thank you to all community members who participated in the community consultation.
